FAQ's for Full-Service Design
HOW DO YOU CHARGE? By the hour. The rate is $150 for principle designer, and $75 for design associates. These fees INCLUDE applicable sales tax.
WHAT IS A BILLABLE EXPENSE? All time spent working on the project, including calls, emails, sourcing, presentations materials, etc.
DO YOU CHARGE TRAVEL TIME? Travel is billed at 50%.
WILL YOU GIVE ME AN ESTIMATE ON DESIGN FEES FOR MY PROJECT? Yes. During the design session we can determine the scope of work based on your budget and needs. I will then put together an estimate and email it to you for review.
HOW COME YOU CAN'T GIVE ME A FLAT RATE ON MY PROJECT? In my experience every project varies so widely that it is in the best interest of both my clients and my business model to use an hourly billing standard.
WILL YOU SHARE YOUR DESIGNER DISCOUNT? Yes, any discounts will be split 50/50. Shipping costs and taxes are not discountable.
WHAT IF I DON’T LIKE SOMETHING ONCE IT ARRIVES? We order samples of materials whenever possible and provide you with scale renderings to help visualize the piece in your space, so hopefully you will like the piece once it has arrived. Not all items can be returned, but In the event that the item can be returned, it will be subject to the vendor's policy which may include fees such as restocking and shipping. Design fees related to the order are not refundable.
WILL YOU BE PERSONALLY HANDLING MY PROJECT? I will oversee all design aspects of the project. Design associates and admin associates may be used to speed along implementation of the design.
HOW DO YOU TRACK YOUR TIME? Very carefully. I take notes on all travel-related business, and use a timing app for all in-office work.
HOW LONG DO PROJECTS NORMALLY LAST? This depends on the scope of the project and what is purchased. Anywhere from 3-9 months is not unusual for interior design projects (start to finish). There are a lot of moving parts to complete any project and innumerable outside parties from factories, to vendors, to custom tradespeople. Delays can be caused by weather, vendor vacations, factory errors, and other unpredictable influences that are out of designer’s control. The most common factor impacting completion time is adding ‘small things’ to the project and changing minds about existing plans. For construction projects, add a contingency of 30-50% of time onto the project.
WILL YOU FIND ME THE LOWEST PRICE FOR THINGS? I do price-check however I prefer to use vendors I have worked with in the past -- even if there is a price difference between 'lowest available online' and my vendor's pricing.
CAN I SHOP ON MY OWN? Often clients find fantastic pieces, so I'm happy to see what you've found. However, because you have hired a designer (me!) to oversee a cohesive look for your home, I do ask that you run it by me before purchasing items that are not on our list.
WHAT ADDITIONAL COSTS CAN I EXPECT? I do my best to give you a full cost outlook of each item, but additional costs such as storage, shipping, installation, or unexpected labor do happen.
WHAT'S UP WITH THE SALES TAX? Unless otherwise noted, I am obligated to collect 4.375% sales tax on all design fees, and 8.875%sales tax for any items purchased on your behalf (unless sales tax has been collected by the vendor). The sales tax on design fees is included in the hourly rate
HOW DO I PLACE AN ORDER THROUGH YOU? Once you receive a Purchase Order you have 3 days to either accept or decline the item. For acceptance, a signed copy of the Purchase Order along with full payment is required to place an order. No item will be ordered until payment is received.
WHAT IF I DECIDE MID-PROJECT I WANT TO ADD CHANGE THE SCOPE OF THE PROJECT? Since I work hourly, increasing the scope is not a problem, assuming scheduling allows. If, for some reason you decide to downshift or terminate the project, that is also an option per the terms of the design agreement.
